Q: How I can know if my hair is healthy? I mean, I think it is corrupt because it is difficult to control. (I have very curly hair that curls and tangles easily). But my mum says its just the way it is with my hair and you can not do anything about it. I like the curls that I have but Im tired of having such a wild style.

A. I know many women with very healthy frizzy hair who think their hair is not healthy because of the amount, and volume of hair they have.

I also know many women whose hair is seriously damaged but attributed this condition to the fact that they have curly hair. To help quell this confusion, I offer these guidelines for healthy hair:

 • Healthy hair is shiny and smooth.

 • Healthy hair doesn’t get tangled too easily

 • Healthy hair is clean and not too fatty.

For women with very curly hair sometimes hair can be healthy but it seems to rebel. Most often this happens because they need a styling product to help keep the cuticle layer smoother and lubricated.

Using a smoothing serum on the hair while it is still wet, gently combing is a good way to help control the hair without much fuss. You can also use styling gels and ointments.

The point is to drive the rollers and make sure they are all arranged in an orderly manner. Damaged hair is often too dry, and to treat damaged hair involves using a rich moisturizer to restore moisture to the hair shaft.

After using a conditioning shampoo, you should follow up with a leave-in conditioner and still rolling with a spray to help seal in moisture and add shine. Try to avoid playing and twitching once your hair has been combed. With curly hair, the more you handle it once it is dry, the more likely you are to get frizz.

Making an appointment at your hairdresser in Livingston will let you know for sure if your curly hair is healthy.

STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU FIGHT AGAINST HAIR LOSS

If you have lost your hair, whether due to genetics or something like chemotherapy, one way in which you can help this is simply to accept it.  There is not shame in losing your hair.  It happens to millions of people around the world.  Embracing it now might just be the best way to go.
Talk with a professional regarding any symptoms or treatment options. You should always speak to your doctor about hair loss before you try any treatments.  Visiting a professional is important because your hair loss could be caused by an underlying issue.  Make sure to carefully consider any treatments or restoration methods you are considering to treat or stop your hair loss.  You always want to stay aware of the ingredients used and specifically, how the active ingredients work.  The research you to may lead you to spend money on a product that has proven to work.  Sometimes, hair loss is only temporary.  A professional can help you sort through those things, and you need to hear what a professional can offer in the way of treatment and coping advice.
Relax in cases of sudden or severe hair thinning; stress is often the primary culprit. Take some time to relax and try not to worry as much.  Relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing exercise, and meditation can be very beneficial.  Once your nerves have calmed, your hair can begin to recover.
This is true if you are dealing with hair loss.  The proper knowledge and advice is required if you want to prevent or reverse hairloss.
Primarily attributed to hereditary factors, receding hair may start at the temples and proceed to worsen over the years, until a person is completely bald.  A receding hairline treatment may bring to a halt your crowing predicament.  There are now many options available in order to stop to a receding hairline and in severe cases, hair transplant can also are performed. Hair treatment could also take several weeks or months to produce the desired effect which is also the reason why most people opt to have a hair transplant despite the sturdy cost.
If you want to reduce hair loss, be sure to add ample protein to your diet.  Meat, nuts and eggs are all high in protein.  This can make hair grow keratin, which is like protein for hair.  A good amount of keratin will strengthen your follicles and slow hair loss.
A great way to boost blood flow to your hair roots is to massage the hair roots for at least two minutes daily.  This helps prevent hair loss, because it gets blood flowing to hair follicles.  Start by massaging your head when you wake up from sleeping are showering or getting ready for bed.
Hair loss may be a sign of medical problems such as infection or other disease.  Your child should see their pediatrician if they are losing hair.  On the other hand, hair twirling or mild hair pulling that results in minimal hair loss is just another self calming behavior seen in infants and children.  Like thumb sucking, if often occurs when the child is relaxed, bored or tired, Children usually outgrow this habit on their own.  There is a more serious form of hair pulling called trichotillomania, which involves pulling the hair from the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, and / or public areas. This is a rare disorder that often suggests an underlying psychological problem and should be evaluated.
Does your hair fall a lot? Don’t worry, you are not alone, Millions of people from all around the world suffer from dry, brittle and weak hair.  Some of the possible reasons for falling hair are:
Tension
Too much work
Illness
Poor diet
Over exposure to the sun
Perming
Amateur bleaching
Too frequent and inexpert use of tints.  Rinse or other colorants.

In other words, stay away from hair treatments and coloring as much as possible. The more things that you do to your hair, the more damaged it becomes.  This will lead to or exacerbate hair loss.  Minimize your use of hair products that include heat, like hair dryers.  Also try not to wt your hair in hot water.  Heat is also damaging. Having toxins in your body can help speed up the hair loss process, so you should aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to help strengthen your hair.  Drinking this amount of water helps to purge your body of the toxins that can damage hair follicles.  Once these toxins are gone, your hair can grow strong.

Thinning Hair The Belgravia Centre Can Help

Male hair loss can manifest itself in a number of ways, and its true that the two most common types are a receding hair line and a thinning around the crown. These two types of hair loss are caused by a genetic condition called male pattern baldness, or to give it its scientific name, Androgenic Alopecia.

However, if youre a man experiencing an all over hair thinning of scalp hair, that unlike male pattern hair loss is not confined to areas on the top of your scalp, you might have another hair loss condition altogether. Happily, whilst male pattern hair loss must be treated in order to prevent further hair loss and to regrow hair, an overall thinning should grow back by itself.

So, what could be causing your thinning hair? If the hair loss is sudden, it may be that youre experiencing Telogen Effluvium. This condition occurs when a sudden shock or stress causes hair to prematurely enter its telogen, or resting phase of its cycle, shedding around three months later. The stress may well have stopped well before the hair loss occurs, and hopefully hair will grow back naturally.

If, after months, hair hasnt returned to its former condition, a bespoke treatment programme based around our high strength minoxidil 10% and 12.5% solution has been shown to have a great success rate, check out our hair loss success stories for visual proof! Minoxidil is a clinically proven hair loss treatment, and is thought to work by activating potassium channels in the scalp.
Depending on the time of year, it could also be that youre experiencing seasonal hair loss. This generally occurs during November and December, and whilst the exact cause is uncertain, it may be due to excess sweating on the scalp in the warmer summer months. There is also the theory that like other mammals, we shed our hair to make way for a thicker winter coat of hair on our scalp. Again, this type of hair loss should fix itself, though if new hair does not grow in place of the shedding, a hair loss treatment plan may be advisable.

If youre experiencing an overall thinning without any other apparent symptoms, it may well be worth visiting one of The Belgravia Centres clinics in Central London for a free diagnosis and treatment advice. Theres no obligation to sign up to anything when you see us, so give us a call on 0800 077 6666 or message us here to arrange an appointment. Not local? An online diagnostic form gives us all the information we need to diagnose you remotely.

Winterizing Your Skin Care

An early snow made a beautiful scene in the canyon where we make our products. It got me thinking about how we winterize our houses, our cars, our clothes, but we may not think about winterizing our skin care regime. Well, now is the time! Here are my tips for getting a healthy all-over glow in the winter.

Hands.

Make sure the soap youre using isnt stripping your skin. Strong detergents in "softsoaps" and other liquid soaps can strip skins vital oils that prevent moisturie loss. (For more on this, visit this blog entry I wrote a while back.) Choose a bar like our Mint Tea Soap thats high in vegetable glycerin to clean hands. Vegetable glycerin draws moisture from the air and to your skin. And its gentle enough to not strip your skins oils.

Now that youve stopped stripping the moisture from your hands, lets make sure it doesnt evaporate in the dry air. You need a seal. No, not the kind at Sea World. Im talking about a moisture seal. In the winter, switch to an oil or cream based hand moisturizer. Our lotion sticks are a great choice. Organic beeswax seals in moisture while organic cocoa butter adds emollience and increases skin elasticity. This increase in elasticity will help heal up any dry cracks.

Feet

Just because you dont have to have sandal-worthy feet in the winter doesnt mean you should neglect them. Taking care of your feet during the winter will make it easier to transition back to sandals in the Spring. Exfoliation and moisturizing is key for feet. An easy one-step way to do this is with a salt scrub. Fill up a little tub with warm water and give your feet the relaxing scrub they deserve. Pay attention to heels and balls of your feet and apply the scrub liberally. After a long day on your feet, the cooling sensation of peppermint will feel absolutely divine. A salt scrub will moisturize and exfoliate all at the same time.

Faces

Once again, make sure that the cleanser youre using isnt drying out your skin. You shouldnt feel strong a tightening and drying feeling after you wash. Try a soap like our Unscented All Over Bar that has added nourishing oils like jojoba and sunflower.

My favorite moisturizer is rosehip seed oil. Rosehip seed oil is high in vitamin A, so it has great anti-aging properties. It absorbs in to the skin quickly and doesnt end up greasy.

Body

A light dry brushing before your bath or shower with a horsehair or other natural fiber brush will slough off dead skin cells and increase blood flow to the skin, giving you a healthy glow. In the bath, use a natural and moisturizing shower gel to gently cleanse skin. Choose one with essential oils, not synthetic fragrance. Choose citrus oils for energizing in the morning, or if you shower at night, pick a calming scent like lavender to end your winter day in peace.

Why We Dont Make Body Lotion

We put the question out there on our Facebook page: Which products would you like to see us make in 2010? Many people responded that they wanted a "normal" body lotion. I thought Id take this opportunity to talk about why our manufacturing standards keep us from making a more typical "body lotion."

I have to start out by saying that we do actually have a body lotion--Its our body butter. Its lotion. Its for your body. So, really, its body lotion. However, the market has come to equate the term "body lotion" with a more watery, less concentrated lotion.

What we know today as "body lotion" is an emulsion--or water and oil mixed together. Most body lotions are what they call an oil-in-water emulsion. Basically 80% water with a little bit of oil. So, why cant we do that?

1. Emulsifiers
In order to create an emulsion, you need an emulsifier--an agent that will combine water and oil. The most common way of doing this is with a chemical emulsifier like stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, PEGs, or vegetable emulsifying wax. These emulsifiers will give you that typical mayonaise-like texture that you would expect in a lotion. We refuse to use these chemicals in our products. While many other companies claim theyre "natural" or "derived from coconut" thats not acceptable to us. Theyre still synthetic chemicals, we cant get them in a certified organic form, and many of them are commonly contaminated with 1,4 dioxane.

There are a few organic ways that we could combine water and oil. A blend of organic lecithin and GMO-free xanthan gum would be one way. But weve tried this before in testing, and used other lotions that use this emulsion system and its just not that great. It gives a really slippery, slimy feel that ends up leaving a sticky feeling once its dried. Theres also the beeswax-borax method of emulsion. But borax doesnt score that great in the EWG skin deep database, and we dont want to use an ingredient if it has a question mark. The main issue with borax is when its inhaled, so even though it wouldnt really put customers at risk in a liquid lotion, our employees would be exposed to it in high quantities. We dont want to take that risk. I dont advise against making your own beeswax/borax lotions at home--the quantities are small enough to not be a problem. But on a larger production scale, a large amount of borax could create quite a cloud of irritating dust.

2. Preservatives
Next, theres the problem of preservatives. Any time you have water in a formula you have the potential for pathogens to grow. Bacteria. Fungi. Mold. So, if we made a water-containing emulsion, wed have to use a preservative. And that usually leads to chemicals---parabens, urea, methylisothiazolinone. And of course we avoid these.

There are some organic ways of preserving--blends of essential oils or with organic ethanol. Blends of preservative essential oils have a tendency to be quite strong-smelling, so they end up taking over the scent of the product. A raspberry lotion doesnt end up smelling very good blended with clove, thyme, lavender and eucalyptus. And with many of our customers preferring unscented options, it just isnt feasible. In addition, theyre not a fail-safe method. Ive tried organic products preserved with essential oils and have seen mold grow before my eyes.

Organic ethanol can be used, but you have to make sure to add plenty of humectants and emollients to counteract the potential for irritation/drying effect from the ethanol.

3. We dont think its right
Yes, we could probably make a body lotion--preserve it with ethanol, emulsify it with xanthan gum and lecithin--but we dont think its right. A product like that is 80% water. We dont feel its right to charge people for a product thats mostly water, and then have it dry out their skin more.

However, we do understand that it is nice to feel that instant "hydrating" feeling that a water-based lotion brings. But you can achieve the same feeling with our body butter. Just turn on the tap, wet your hand, and pat on water to your skin. Then, apply a small amount of our body butter. Youll have that lotion-ey feel that youre used to, and it will make your body butter last even longer. (Just be sure to keep water out of the body butter jar.) Your skin will thank you.

Combat Hair Loss With These Natural Methods

A common experience that many people face is hair loss. Hair loss results from many things, such as age, stress and genetics. There are many ways to stop hair loss, such as with medication. The following article will provide you with tips on how to stop hair loss.
Do everything you can to reduce the stress in your life. Stress can cause and also exacerbate hair loss. It is important to practice taking deep breaths to help yourself calm down and to find relaxing activities, such as reading, that you enjoy doing. If you can minimize the amount of stress in your life, you should see improvements in the quality of your hair.
Iron is one of the minerals that you will need to implement into your diet if you want to have strong, flexible hair. Make sure that you eat certain cereals and pasta frequently to prevent iron deficiency and create fortification for your scalp. This will aid in preventing hair loss.
Try adding white sesame seeds to your diet to cause hair loss to occur more slowly. Eat some white sesame seeds with breakfast every morning. The seeds contain healthy doses of magnesium and calcium. Magnesium and calcium nourish the scalp and can reduce loss of hair.
If you are taking a bath or shower, try to stick to lukewarm or cold water to wash your hair. Hot water can strip all the oils from your skin, which can yield the dryness and breakable hair. Only wash with warm water if you desire to have a healthy head of hair.
As the week goes on, try to get as much fresh air as you can to help replenish your body with oxygen. If you stay indoors all the time, your hair will get very damp and lose its texture. This will result in poor quality and can make your hair fragile.
Regular scalp massages can stimulate nerves and engender improved blood flow. Regular scalp massages have been show to be very effective. This is because the stimulation from massaging your scalp helps to stimulate more hair growth through the reduction in stress and tension, which is one of the known causes for early hair loss. This can safely be done every day.
Jojoba oil is a natural ingredient you can use to prevent your hair from falling out. This natural oil works by keeping the scalp healthy and hair strong. It also controls dandruff as well. Jojoba oil can be found at many pharmacies and drug stores, usually in the hair product aisle.
Many people enjoy aloe vera and the way it keeps hair from falling out, this may be an option for you. Just rub Aloe Vera into your scalp nightly. The massaging motion increases circulation to your roots while aloe vera naturally strengthens them.
Furthermore, hair loss is a common experience for many people. It can be caused by many different factors, such as age or stress. With different resulting factors comes different treatment methods. Try the tips from this article, so you can control or completely stop hair loss.

Teenage Hair Loss What Should You Do

Any one young or old who is losing more than 100 head hairs a day, should seek help.  Hair loss can be the first outward sign of illness.  Healthcare provides can ascertain whether the cause of teenage hair loss lies in an illness, medication side effect, stress poor/inadequate nutrition, genetic predisposition or hormone imbalance.
Hair loss can occur from hereditary factors, health problems and using harsh chemical hair dyes.  Teenagers who suffer from stress such as peer pressure and relationship problems may lose their hair.
Hormonal changes are a common cause of hair loss in teens and adults.  From the onset of puberty throughout the teenage years, girls experience hormonal fluctuations.  During this time the body need extra support.  Good nutrition, vitamin supplementation, exercise, adequate sleep and ample relaxation will help ease a girl through these hormonal changes.  Many teens nowadays have bad eating and sleeping habits.  They often prefer to spend their time socializing on the computer, leaving little if any time for fresh air and exercise.  These bad habit wreak havoc on the hormonal system during this time and often cause undesirable effects such as hair loss. Some medication prescribed for teenager can result in loss of hair.
These may include drugs to treat bipolar disorder, chemotherapy drugs, blood thinners, blood pressure medications, gout medications and high levels of vitamin A found in acne treatment.  To prevent hair loss, ask your doctor to describe the side effects before accepting a new prescription. Or if you are currently experiencing hair loss, consider switching medications to prevent future hair loss and encourage regrowth of lost hair.
Hair loss in young teenagers (often referred to as alopecia) is often thought to be caused by stress.  Your doctor might decide that is the cause of your hair loss. If so you should work on reducing your stress levels.  The best way to start is to talk to a parent or guardian about how you feel and whether anything is troubling you.  Then you can work on resolving problems together.  If you don’t feel you can talk to a parent or guardian, perhaps there is a teacher at school you could talk to?
At your age the hair loss might be due to stress, or some other underlying condition.  I highly recommend visiting your doctor to have your scalp and overall health examined.  Don’t be embarrassed to talk to your parent or guardians about your hair loss. It is very important that you address this problem now.  It could be something simple, such as a small dietary change that is required that may not only improve you hair but also your overall health.
The causes of children’s hair loss are numerous and varied including trauma resulting from an accident, symptoms of birth defects, scarring from surgery to remedy birth defects and alopecia areata (an autoimmune condition in which the body mistakenly form antibodies against its own hair follicies).  The condition commonly begins with the rapid onset of bald spots over the scalp. Although one smooth bald spot is most common, many may be seen, and every hair on the body may be lost in some patients.

Your Guide to Underarm Rashes

Sometimes Ill receive e-mails from people telling me that they have a baking soda allergy, and cant use it in a deodorant. I wanted to talk today about this as well as other causes for underarm rashes.

There actually is no such thing as a baking soda allergy.
An allergy is an immune response to a substance that the body sees as "foreign." It sends white blood cells to attack the foreign substance, usually a protein or a substance that binds to a protein (called a hapten.) Baking soda is a simple substance thats easily soluble in water and breaks down in to sodium and bicarbonate ions (or to elemental carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen), which are common metabolites in the body. All are elements that the body needs to function. It doesnt act like a protein or bind to proteins to create a molecule that triggers an immune response.  Theres no function whereby baking soda could be an allergen.

Now, that said, a person can get a skin reaction from baking soda, known as contact dermatitis.  There are two types of contact dermatitis: allergic and irritant.  Baking soda reactions fall under the category of irritant contact dermatitis.  Baking soda is alkaline, so if high amounts are left on skin for a long time it can irritate skin because it disrupts the skins acid mantle, leading to moisture loss.  Brief exposures can cause reactions in someone that has severely impaired skin function, such as someone who has been through radiation treatment for cancer, or been through other serious illnesses. But for most of the population, brief or low concentrations of alkalinity are just fine (and can be beneficial for cleansing purposes). Irritant contact dermatitis looks and feels like a burn. One will experience redness, dryness, or scaly/leathery-feeling skin. You will read a lot about this in forums with people making home-made deodorants because baking soda is usually used in too high concentrations in these formulas (usually around 30%, sometimes 100%!).

However, baking soda is usually not the problem
This rarely happens with our deodorants because the baking soda is used at a less than 5% concentration, plus our formula has the moisturizing oils that counteract the possible drying effect of the baking soda.  Additionally, if you sweat at all, youll neutralize the baking soda (because sweat is mildly acidic) and it wont be an irritant any longer.

Most of the time, when using a natural deodorant, rashes are caused by perspiration.

Other Common Causes for Rashes

Intertrigo
Intertrigo is the most common form of underarm rash, which is irritation caused by skin-to-skin friction. When moist skin rubs against itself, that friction causes skin to become inflamed. Youll start to notice a red, raw spot right in the crease of your underarm (or other folds of skin.) It can progress from there and get larger. If it progresses untreated, it can get flaky, or infected and oozy.

To prevent intertrigo, the key is to reduce the friction in the underarm.  This is best done with a natural powder such as arrowroot or corn starch. Reapplying our Pit Putty sticks frequently throughout the day to keep the underarm dry and friction-free can control intertrigo.  This may seem counterintuitive because when you first get an underarm rash you might blame the deodorant. When in fact the deodorant can definitely help. Of course, if your rash is infected or doesnt go away, please visit a doctor.

Heat Rash
"This deodorant is clogging my pores!" might be your first reaction to seeing a heat rash because it looks like a bunch of pimples.  Heat rash is actually caused when perspiration gets trapped in your skin, causing infected and blocked pores. Liberally applying powders as mentioned above, frequently throughout the day, will help draw out that moisture and dry up the heat rash.  Cleaning with alcohol (rubbing or ethanol) can also help to dry out the infected pores and help keep the infection from growing. Cortisone creams can also help if youve got a tough case. Heat rash can happen in the underarm, the groin area, and other folds of skin that may be moist. If your heat rash doesnt go away or continues to spread, do see a doctor.

Infected Sweat Gland(s)
Excess perspiration can also cause sweat glands to become infected.  These will feel like deep tender bumps, and your lymph nodes may also become infected. This can also happen during anti-perspirant use, because the blockage that these chemicals cause.  Infected sweat glands can be serious and may require the use of antibiotics to treat. Keeping your underarms dry by applying powders frequently throughout the day can help to prevent infected sweat glands.

Allergic Dermatitis
Allergic dermatitis can be the cause of underarm rashes, although it is less common than the conditions described above. Rashes will present on all areas of skin the product was applied to, but also may spread out from there due to the immune response. Allergic dermatitis can come in the form of a simple rash, but can also be hives, itching, pustules, blisters, and thickening of skin.  If you suspect that youre allergic to a deodorant, one thing you can do is to apply the product to your wrist and see if you get a reaction on your wrist as well.  Also keep in mind that it can take 1-2 days for an allergic rash to appear, so if you just started a new deodorant and immediately noticed an allergic rash, you may want to consider that it may have been something that you put on your skin within the last 48 hours thats causing the rash. Additionally, there is a phenomenon called a memory response. If you previously had an allergic reaction, say, on your eyelids from a makeup, if your fingers (but not your eyelids) touch that substance again, your eyelids can flare up, even without that area of skin touching the substance. So if youre prone to allergic rashes, also consider not just what you put on that area of skin, but what other parts of your body has touched. Allergies can be very tricky to figure out; visit your allergist to pinpoint your exact triggers.

Vegetable Emulsifying Wax

Ive talked about how, although its a great starting point for learning about chemicals in personal care products, the Cosmetics Databse is not the end-all source for determining product safety. Today, Im going to show you how an ingredient that scores a "0" in the database, should really score much much higher.

Vegetable emulsifying wax is used in a lot of products, from lotions to conditioners--even makeup--to make oil and water combine in to a lotion form. Its the emulsifier of choice for home crafters and larger companies alike because its easy to work with and its relatively cheap. At first glance it looks natural (after all, its made up from "vegetable" material, right?) but once you learn what it really is, its not so great after all.

I did some digging and found out what vegetable emulsifying wax is actually comprised of:
Cetearyl Alcohol (a blend of cetyl and steareth alcohol)
Polysorbate 60
PEG-150 Stearate
Steareth-20
Lets look at these chemicals one by one.

Cetearyl Alcohol
Although cetearyl alcohol scores a "0" risk score in the Cosmetics Database, the two ingredients that its made up of, Cetyl and Steareth Alcohol, both score a "1" for a mild risk of skin irritation and tumor formation at high doses. Not a terrible score, and Im not particularly outraged by this ingredient. However, is it a synthetically produced chemical? Yes. Is it truly natural? No.

Polysorbate 60
Also scores a "1" risk score for possibly being a reproductive toxin and for tumor formation at high doses. When its in small amounts in a lotion, youre probably pretty safe. That said, its the same story as the cetearyl alcohol--its not truly natural and its still a chemical.

PEG-150 Stearate
This is where it gets hairy. PEG is short for polyethylene glycol. Polyethylene glycol is an ethoxylated compound, meaning that its been processed with ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen. Traces of this compound can be left in the product, along with byproducts such as 1,4-dioxane, also a known carcinogen. (Read more about the latest 1,4-dioxane scandal here.) PEG-150 Stearate scores a 4-7 risk score in the cosmetics database, "depending on product usage." So, in a product that would remain on your skin, like lotion or deodorant, Id imagine that theyd give it a "7".

Steareth-20
Even though this ingredient only scores a "1" in the database, it too is an ethoxylated compound, and can also contain traces of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Its created by taking stearyl alcohol (a naturally-ocurring fatty alcohol) and combining it with ethylene oxide. The number following the "steareth" is how many units of ethylene oxide reacted with the stearyl alcohol. So, steareth-20 has been reacted with 20 units of ethylene oxide. There are a lot of steareths that range from 2 on up. Steareth-20 is the highest--meaning its been processed with the highest amount of ethylene oxide.

So, how does this happen? How does an ingredient with all these chemicals end up with a "0" risk score in the Cosmetics Databse?

How this happens
The Cosmetics Database is just that--a database. When an ingredient is entered in to the database, it searches about 50 other databases for safety information based on the key words of the ingredient. When "vegetable emulsifying wax" is entered, the database searches for studies with those words. It doesnt take in to account the fact that there are separate ingredients within the one ingredient. There are little to no studies on "vegetable emulsifying wax" as an overall blend, so no information comes up and the ingredient passes with a "0" score. This happens all the time. ("Coconut fatty acid cream base", anyone?)

How to avoid ethoxylated compounds

Compounds created with ethylene oxide (or ethoxylated compounds) are pretty easy to spot. Any time that you see an "eth" you can be sure its ethoxylated. Sodium Laureth sulfate, sodium myreth sulfate, steareth, ceteareth, polyethylene. PEG is short for Polyethylene Glycol, so those are culprits as well.

Safer Alternatives
These lotion products are 95% or more organic, and contain no "vegetable emulsifying wax" or iffy ingredients.

Beware The Lice Darling!

Beware The Lice Darling
The head louse is an extremely small creature about the size of a match-head, with six stubby legs specially adapted for holding on to hair. Lice live near the scalp where they find food and warmth. They tend to hide when the hair is parted and their color blends in with that of the scalp.
Head lice lay six to eight eggs a day, gluing them to hair strands. A week later the eggs hatch leaving empty egg cases commonly called nits. These are white and look dandruff. Since the eggs are fixed to the hairs at their roots, the distance of the nits from the scalp shows how long the eggs have been present.
Head lice can’t jump or fly, nor do they live in bed, furniture or clothes. The only way they can be passed on is by close head-to-head contact. Most of us think that only class rooms are affected but office workers aren’t immune.
Head lice feed on blood using their mouth parts to pierce the scalp. They even inject a local anesthetic to prevent any pain and a thinning chemical to stop blood clotting making it easier for them to feed. Scratching can lead to a secondary bacterial infection, in severe cases; the sticky blood serum mats the hair and forms crusts.
The conventional treatment is often an insecticide lotion which is applied before bed and washed off in the morning. Each family member must be treated at the same time. There are shampoos but they are less effective. To prevent the lice from becoming resistant to the drug, the shampoo and lotion should be used in rotation.
You could kill the lice by soaking hair overnight in oil of lavender. All you had to do put a few drops of the oil in a washbasin of warm water, immerse your hair for several minutes, pat it dry, leave overnight and shampoo it off in the morning. Then repeat the next night to be sure all the lice are dead. The oil is safe, pleasant smelling, and lice are not yet resistant to it. Fellow this treatment by rubbing an infusion or rosemary into his scalp daily, it’s an excellent hair tonic. Aloe Vera gel is a suitable alternative.
When there is crusting many doctors will prescribe antibiotics. Prefer an infusion of comfrey rubbed in and left it the crusting is mild or comfrey ointment when severe. Some naturopaths also recommend applying plain live yoghurt prior to the comfrey.
After treatment, remove the dead lice, eggs and nits with a fine-toothed metal comb, as the teeth on plastic combs are too widely spaced to be effective. People with poor body defense mechanisms seem more prone to head lice and their complication, a fresh whole food diet, regular exercise and sufficient rest and relaxation will ensure the immune system is functioning normally and best defense against parasites and infection.

Alopecia Areata All You Need To Know

At The Belgravia Centre, we often see patients who are experiencing alopecia areata. This condition, generally accepted to be an auto-immune disorder but which also appears to have external triggers, appears as sudden patchy hair loss, something which can be a cause of much worry and distress. Unlike genetic hair loss (androgenic alopecia) alopecia areata will often fix itself within a few months. Below, we explore the condition in greater detail and offer some comfort to those who are not seeing any regrowth by explaining the clinically proven treatments that we offer.

An auto-immune disease is one that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against your own tissues. In this case, the auto-immune response causes hairs to prematurely enter the resting (telogen) stage of their cycle very quickly. This causes the hairs to shed faster than usual, either in certain areas on the scalp, or, in some cases, over the entire scalp, which is known as alopecia totalis. Even more serious cases of shedding can affect the entire body (alopecia universalis).

However, there are several external factors that appear to trigger alopecia areata. The correlation between stress and the condition is widely accepted, but with no scientific proof of the mechanism at work yet, we can only treat the condition rather than prevent it. That said, those who experience a stressful event or one-off shock usually find that their hair grows back to how it was before a few months down the line. However, if you suffer from chronic (persisting) stress as well as alopecia areata, the link is less clear, with studies often lacking control groups. We would always advise that anyone suffering from chronic stress visit their GP and attempt to deal with the cause as well as addressing the hair loss.

Other proposed external causes of alopecia areata are hormonal changes (for instance from fertility drugs or the contraceptive pill), pregnancy, allergies and viral or bacterial infections. Other factors such as seasonal changes and genetic pre-disposition may be harder to realise. In terms of genetic pres-disposition, it has been found that some genes are much more common in people with alopecia areata compared to the general population. However, it is also widely believed that an environmental trigger is also needed to bring about the onset of this type of alopecia areata.

For those dealing with alopecia areata, who are not seeing any regrowth, clinically proven treatment is available. During our many years of treating alopecia areata, we have established that our unique high strength minoxidil 10% and 12.5% + azealic acid cream formulations are the most effective means of treating the condition, when self-applied twice a day. The minoxidil works by activating potassium channels in the scalp and stopping follicle damage and encouraging regrowth, whilst the azelaic acid inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which joins with testosterone to create DHT, the reduction of which in the scalp encourages hair growth.

Take a look at our vast collection of alopecia success stories for an idea of the results you can expect should you begin a personal treatment programme with The Belgravia Centre. For a free consultation to establish how we can help you, just call 0800 077 6666 or message us online, or for those who cant make it to our central London location, you can complete an online diagnostic form and we will diagnose over the internet.

Tips On Preventing Your Hair From Falling Out

When you were a kid, your biggest wish may have been to finally ride the roller coaster or to actually handle the remote by yourself. When you grow older and lose your hair, your biggest wish then becomes just a few sprouts to show some signs of life up there. With these tips, you can work to get that head of hair back where it belongs.
Fluctuating hormonal levels have also been linked to hair loss. Whether they are fluctuating due to a birth control pill, your time of the month, or menopause, changing hormonal levels have been shown to play a role in hair loss. If this is the case, its important to not freak out because this hair loss is typically temporary.
One of the best ways to limit hair loss is to reduce the amount of stress in your life. If you are at a job that puts you under a lot of pressure, make sure to practice stress relieving exercises during the day. This will make you feel better and help hair loss.
You can slow down your hair loss by consuming white sesame seeds. You can try to eat roughly a handful of the white sesame seeds every morning. These seeds are exceptionally healthy, containing 1200 mg of calcium and magnesium. Calcium combined with magnesium is great nourishment for your scalp and reduces hair loss.
Vitamin C will slow down your hair loss. Vitamin C helps get the blood flowing to the hair follicles by maintaining capillaries, allowing more blood to get to the scalp. If you get more blood going to your scalp, it will make your hair grow faster.
Staying out in the sun too long can have a drying effect on your hair, which can eventually lead to balding. Make sure to limit your sun exposure, especially during the spring and summer. This will not only keep you safe, but will allow your hair to stay manageable and retain moisture.
As tough it may be, you may want to avoid masturbating if you want to prevent balding and hair loss. Research has shown that masturbation leads to elevated levels of DHT, a male hormone that causes hair loss. If you are going to masturbate, try not to do so everyday.
Although you may use a lot of hair spray and mousse products, you should avoid these if youre losing your hair. They can simply be too harsh on your scalp and can ultimately damage your hair follicles and cause your hair to fall out. Until you can strengthen your hair, avoid the harsh products.
You can also re-grow hair and prevent loss by doing regular scalp massages. Try using some type of oil, such as mineral oil, when you are massaging your scalp, for the best results.
Our wants, hopes and needs change throughout life. But at the end of it all, some of us leave the world with as little hair up top as we started out with. That doesnt have to be the case here. The tips above can ensure that you grow your hair back if you implement them correctly, so pay close attention and use this information wisely.

How To Choose A Hair Shampoo

Hair shampoo is abundant in the market today with various kinds and many claims. We can choose the shampoo base on the purpose whether its for dandruff combat, reduce oil on the scalp or hair loss treatment.

Picking the wrong shampoo can cause hair loss. Different manufacturers have their own formula. Some one may feel satisfied with freshness feeling after using a shampoo while other may has more hair loss after using the same shampoo.

Here are some tips to choose hair shampoo:

  1. We can wash our hair daily using a mild shampoo to keep our scalp clean and get no irritation. Natural shampoo is recommended. Its much better than washing your hair every two or three days with powerful antidandruff shampoo in a long term.
  2. Antidandruff shampoo that is being used in a long term can cause scalp dryness and that will make the dry skin falls as a white particles. I was advised to shampoo daily with natural shampoo and if I want to use antidandruff shampoo, it should be done only twice a week between normal shampoos.
  3. A shampoo ad can be confusing. A cheap and expensive shampoo can be claimed with almost the same advantages. Pay attention to the ingredients in a shampoo container. An extract and an essence has a big different! Extracts are made from natural sources with active ingredients.
  4. Shampoo is used for cleaning your hair. Conditioner is used to glue thin layer on your hair. To maximize the effect, use conditioner separately (not 2in1) and only on your hair, not the scalp. Improperly cleaned conditioner can accumulate in your scalp then make itchy feeling.

Hair shampoo is the first step to a clean and healthy scalp. Its important to choose the most suitable shampoo for each person.

A chickens egg yolk can contain up to 6.5g of healthy protein, which means it’s a wonderful way to build up, and fortify your existing hair. If you’re losing your hair, first you need to work out the reason why you’re losing it. (is it damage, hormonal, pattern baldness etc?)

Then you need to look at what practical solutions are available to you.

A hair transplant although costly has become more and more of a viable solution due to the advances in modern technology.

Eating foods like egg yolk, and applying it to your hair as a conditioner will assist whatever hair restoration solution you decide to go with.

There are also other things you can do to assist.

Nutrients like protein are carried through your blood stream where your hungry hair follicles can get fed directly at your scalp. This is why massaging your scalp to encourage blood flow will be very helpful.

Whatever solution you choose maintaining, or switching to a healthy diet will go a long way to helping your new hair strands to grow and fully develop.
